A WINK AND A SMILE

May 18-21 ( Monday - Thursday) 3:30, 5:30. 7:30

Dir. Deirdre Allen Timmons - 2008 - 91m An intoxicating mix of private thoughts and public behavior, A Wink and a Smile exposes more than the human body by putting gender, power, sexuality and social identity under the glittery spotlight, as it follows the lives of ten "ordinary" women who do something extraordinary – learn the art burlesque dancing and striptease. Through their adventures, we see how a homemaker, a reporter, a doctor, an opera singer, a taxidermist and a college student, join the American cultural revival of burlesque, as it moves from fringe fascination to mainstream obsession, engaging a world where performance art and showgirl spectacle, music, theater and sensuality crash into over-the-top glamour - a world where many want to go, but very few dare. Here's the trailer.

Burlesque Inspiration: Buster Keaton

Buster KeatonImage via Wikipedia

Can't talk about Charlie Chaplin without mentioning the great stone face, Buster Keaton.

Buster Keaton got the nickname " Great Stone Face" due to his lack of expression. The man gets pushed around, tossed, flung, blown away and has a house fall on him. Still, the same expression. Brilliant I tells you. While I don't recommend throwing the smiles and winks out the window (no duh) , if you were to do a slapstick heavy piece, keeping the stoic, deadpan look would make the piece ten times hilarious.

Boom. Clips. Enjoy.

I recommend watching The General and Steamboat Bill Jr. for starters.

Costume Inspiration: Peacock feathers

Or big cock feathers as my boyfriends niece would say.
I absolutley love the colors and shape of peacock feathers. They make any blah outfit pop and this seasons feather trend is featuring fantastic peacock feather accessories.
I just ordered a package of 24 feathers for $7.99 from Oreintal Trading. I can't wait to cut them up and make hair/shoe clips, earrings, necklaces, and maybe a fan.

Here's some awesome burlesque costumes and accessories using peacock feathers.

Cathrine D'Lish and her amazing dress. She made it herself.

While I am not a fan of feathers + spirit gum , these look stunning and are sold out. :(

There are many many more peacock products. I wish those feathers would hurry up and get here. I'm ready to craft.
